Voices

August 23, 2023

“Why do you hate me so much?” She asks with a husky voice.

“I don’t hate you.” Replies the calm voice in her head.

“LIAR!” She screams, shattering the cold mirror with her fist.

“What makes you think I hate you?” Ask a hundred bloody shards from the tiled floor.

“You’re always in there, silently watching, judging every move I make.”

“I may not agree with many of your decisions, but that doesn’t mean I judge you for making them.”

The white towel around her hand begins to turn red.

“You should get a Doctor to see that. You cut yourself pretty bad.” The voice is soft and calm, as always… but it still makes her cringe.

“Stop telling me what to do!” She yells, slamming the bathroom door, hoping it will shut the voice inside while knowing that can never happen.

“Please, I’m only trying to help you.”

“You’re trying to control my life, just like you always did, like you’ve always done.”

“I only do it because I love you.”

“You never loved me, you were always telling me how to be and what to do. Trying to turn me into you.”

“Of course I love you. Would I have given you my heart if I didn’t?”

“Curse that stupid transplant! Fuck those stupid doctors! Fuck you for having that stupid accident just when I needed a heart!”

“But I gave you your life back. You’re still here, you’re healthy and have a chance to live a long and wonderful life instead of watching it pass from a hospital bed. What else do you want?”

“I want to live it in my own way, without the ghost of my twin sister trying to do it for me!”

She can feel the voice receding back into a deep corner of her mind. It won’t stay there long, but at least for now she can live her own life. She can enjoy the silence.
