306 – Sleepless

She felt her quietly snoring beside her. The warmth of her soft breath gently caressing her neck.

“What if I hurt you?”

The thought bounced inside her head as she stared at the ceiling, watching the lights of the few cars passing outside chase each other thru the darkness.

“What if I hurt you?”

She felt her body shift closer to hers. She didn’t have to turn to see her beautiful face, it was so clear in her mind.

“What if I hurt you?”

So many years of running had become a habit. She wasn’t used to feeling safe, or happy, or home. Those feelings scared her.

“What if I hurt you?”

No, she was not scared of what she felt… she was afraid of the pain she was risking. She was afraid of shedding her old habits but she was also afraid of losing her.

“What if I hurt you?”

She was so afraid of losing her she felt she had to run, ride away, feel the breeze on her face and listen to the road under her wheels.

“What if I hurt you?”

She said the words aloud in the darkness without noticing. A soft pair of arms wrapped themselves around her. A sweet voice whispered in her ear.

“Then perhaps I’ll hurt you too… and we’ll both yell, or cry, or make up, or make love… but we’ll do it together.”

She turned to find her golden eyes looking deep into hers.

“I love you too.” She finally said, the last words lost within their kissing lips.
