291 – The gilded piper

Warnings were sound,
But there was no one there
Who listened.

Everybody was so busy
Happily cheering
As they marched to the tune
Of easy answers
To tough questions.

Those few voices that refused
To take part on the theatrical game
Of “mine’s bigger than your’s”
Found themselves mocked,
And simply left.

Only when the flames
Began to feel too close for comfort
Did some of the laughter
Begin to die down.

It was too late,
The world had closed the door behind them,
And thrown away the key.
