The phone rang once again and once again he didn’t answer.

He wasn’t mad, not even hurt… he just didn’t care anymore. The voice in the line pleaded, then demanded, even threatened. It was all background noise to him now, words devoid of meaning or emotion.

He had been scared at first, not sure if life had meaning beyond the mutual pain they had dubbed love. He had woken in the middle of the night with the certainty of his body beside him… then cried himself to sleep over the empty half of their shared bed.

He remembered very clearly the exact moment when his heart had finally broken. Unlike what he expected, he wasn’t even thinking about him when it happened. He was waiting for the first morning coffee to brew when he looked out of the window and noticed the passing clouds.

There was no pain, no jagged shards cutting thru his innards, he didn’t shed a single tear. It was just a quiet and single hollow crack.

His eyes blurred for just a moment before returning to the clouds. Suddenly his nose was filled with the strong and tender smell of fresh brewed coffee… he started chuckling, and then laughing as he realized it was the smell of new found freedom.

He took one last sip from his coffee and looked around the empty apartment. His bags were waiting in the car. He picked his backpack from the table, locked the door behind him, and shed their past together.

The phone rang again… there was no one there to answer
